Top Tip Thursday: Make viewing emails easier with Outlook’s Immersive Reader

To use the Immersive Reader function in Outlook, you need to:

  1. Open the Outlook application.
  2. In View, click Immersive Reader.
  3. Select between the 6 different options:
    1. Column width – within this you have 4 options: very narrow, narrow, moderate, and wide. This is to help with focusing on the text and improve comprehension of what you’re reading.
    2. Page colour – Outlook offers a wide range of colours to choose from, either choose from Microsoft’s colour palette or create a custom colour to suit your needs. This can make scanning text less straining on your eyes, especially for those with dyslexia and other reading difficulties.
    3. Line focus – this feature helps to remove distractions by letting you focus on 1, 3, or 5 lines at a time and blocking out the rest of the text.
    4. Text spacing – this increases the spacing between words, characters, and lines.
    5. Syllables – this breaks down the syllables to improve word recognition and pronunciation.
    6. Read aloud – this highlights each word as it reads your emails aloud. You can adjust the reading speed and choose whether you want a male or female voice.
