Top Tip Thursday: Protect your online accounts with Microsoft’s Authenticator app

We have already covered how online authentication works, specifically multi-factor authentication, but to explain what it is briefly, 2FA uses a second factor such as your phone to verify who you are, making it more difficult for others to break into your account.

Microsoft’s Authenticator app provides different methods of verifying who you are when you want to log into an account. You can either approve a notification on your phone with your fingerprint, face ID, or PIN; or use the code generator to input a code on the platform you want to sign into – this can be any platform that requires verification, not just Microsoft platforms.

To download the Microsoft Authenticator app:

  1. Download the app on your mobile phone from your device’s app store
  2. Following the instructions on screen, scan the QR code on displayed on your computer and fill in the relevant information

To add a third-party account, simply:

  1. Click the Add button
  2. Select third party accounts
  3. then use your phone to scan the QR code on the screen.

The app will then generate a code, which you can enter and verify.
