Microsoft offer free services for not-for-profit organisations: what are they and do you qualify?

Back to basics

Traditionally, businesses would have had to purchase servers on their own hardware as their businesses grew or pay a third-party company to host for them. That’s where Microsoft Azure comes in.

To put it simply, Microsoft Azure is a cloud computing platform that operates applications and services through Microsoft managed data centres, so you don’t need to invest in the hardware traditionally required.

Microsoft Azure provide a scalable solution to hosting servers through their own data centres. This means businesses only pay for what they need, when they need it. With no up-front cost and no requirement to purchase expensive additional onsite hardware, Azure also helps with cost efficiencies and lets employees work from anywhere using cloud technology. Win-win all round, right?

What are the benefits for NFP’s?

Microsoft offer free and discounted products and licences for eligible non-profit organisations, including Office 365 cloud services. Charities can also benefit by receiving £3500 for free to improve their technology capabilities as part of Microsoft’s non-profit programme. Did we mention, for free?

Eligibility criteria

To qualify for the discounts and benefits Microsoft Azure for non-profits has to offer, organisations must:

  • Hold a recognised charity number
  • Operate on a not-for-profit basis
  • Only use the licenses for their organisation and staff
